Our January group spent their last morning in Port Alfred enjoying the Volleyball courts before being taken over to our Bisho Campus to start their first phase of Ground School.
Solo Recognition - December
The traditional removal of a new pilot's shirt tail is a sign of the instructor's new confidence in his student.
In the days of tandem trainers, the instructor would tug at the student’s shirt tail whenever he was getting himself into trouble. After the first solo, the new pilot is competent in the air and does not need such a safety device.
This tradition has been modernised at 43 by cutting ties instead of shirt tails at our monthly Solo parties.

It gives us great pleasure to welcome Willie Reed, former SAAF BBJ Pilot and a onetime SAAF Navigator, to the Ground School team.
4 former SAA Cadets who excelled during their training at 43 Air School have joined us as future instructors. They commence formal training on Monday on a 43 Air School sponsorship. We are pleased to welcome Muhammed Akhalwaya, Shannon Maclean, Lindy Ward and Mihir Patel back to the School to further their aviation careers!

The New Year has come and gone! The January Intake has started training and the first Commercial Pilot Ground School of 2015 has commenced. Examinations always cause stress! I lecture Human Performance in which I explain to our students that stress is caused by a “perceived” threat; when we doubt ourselves the stress is much higher than when we have the appropriate knowledge or experience to deal with the threat. The threat need not even be real; it is our perception of the threat that causes the stress. 2014 has seen a great deal of uncertainty re the SA CAA theoretical examinations for the Commercial and Airline Transport Pilot examinations. Pass rates across the country have been abysmal in certain subjects, much to the consternation of the candidates sitting these examinations.
COMPASS: Computerized Pilot Aptitude Screening System

Screening pilot candidates in order to assess appropriate set of skills to become a commercial aviation pilot is a difficult and time consuming task. FTO’s or Airlines often have to free-up time of experienced pilots and instructors to assess candidates suitability as commercial aviation pilots. COMPASS is a pilot selection and screening system used by airlines and FTO’s to screen and select candidate pilots for commercial aviation pilot training. Because COMPASS is a series of tests taken on a normal PC, the results are not open to interpretation, all candidates are tested on the same set of skills required to become an airline pilot. The results of the COMPASS pilot aptitude test clearly show in which skills the pilot candidate is proficient or not.
