43 Air School employee for the month of May is Instructor Charlize Thessner for her airmanship in handling an emergency. The citation reads as follows: "Charlize Thessner was the instructor on a training flight which experienced undercarriage difficulties. She applied the appropriate procedures to ensure that the undercarriage was down using the Event Management Model. Notwithstanding the opinion of the external observers after a low flypast to the effect that the gear seemed to be fully down and locked; Charlize expected that it may not be locked down.

43 @ Play (June)
This month saw one of our smaller groups attend the traditional welcome Team Building event. The group may have been small, but we still had loads of fun!
Students were tasked with building a structure with spagetti and mini marshmallows within a 15 minute time limit and the end results were quite impressive.
43 Welcome (May)
A very warm welcome to our May Intake!
Every six weeks we welcome a new group of students to the family by means of a formal welcome from our CEO, Attie Niemann, followed by a guided tour of our facilities and finally, in true South African style, a traditional braai. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet the new students and their parents in an informal setting.
Dreams Do Come True
My happiest childhood memories were that of a four year old sitting in our backyard in the country town of Wellington, waiting for the Boeing to fly over our house. At the slightest sound or sight, there would be a performance from me. I would call the whole neighbourhood’s kids to come and look at the aeroplane that will bring me something special one day. Well, I actually thought it would bring me another brother or sister…because, I thought that was where babies came from.
Solo Recognition - May
The traditional removal of a new pilot's shirt tail is a sign of the instructor's new confidence in his student.
In the days of tandem trainers, the instructor would tug at the student’s shirt tail whenever he was getting himself into trouble. After the first solo, the new pilot is competent in the air and does not need such a safety device.
This tradition has been modernised at 43 by cutting ties instead of shirt tails at our monthly Solo parties.

43 Air School has an advantage in having its own Air Traffic Services (ATS) College. We train Aerodrome Flight Information Service (AFIS) personnel for service both here and elsewhere in the country. The AFIS provides pilots of aircraft with details of other known traffic taking off, landing and flying in the vicinity of the airfield. Local knowledge is thus extremely important and this is one of the reasons why the AQFIS had to validate his/her license at the airfield at which they are going to operate.
